Previously only available with the Duramax diesel engine, the Allison 10-speed transmission is now standard with the 6.6-liter gas engine as well. With far more ratios in a similar overall range, the engine stays closer to its peak torque range, putting every single foot-pound of torque to good use. This increases the gas engine’s maximum towing capacity by 2,000 pounds for a total of 26,000 pounds. In addition, ratio changes are smoother, and downshifts are quicker.

The Duramax 6.6-liter turbo-diesel has not been ignored either, with horsepower increasing to 470 and peak torque up to 975 lb-ft. Torque is up by 25% in lower rpm as well for improved climbing and trailering ability.

Design and Features

The HD was given a new look to go with its mechanical enhancements, including a new front-end design with new headlights, a new grille, and new C-shaped LED daytime running lights framing the whole upper front end. Now standard on LTZ, ZR2, and High Country are dual-projector headlights. In addition to improved lighting, as owners approach or depart their 2024 Silverado HD, the units engage in an animated lighting sequence to welcome or bid them farewell from the truck.

The biggest change on the inside is that LT, LTZ, and High Country models have an entirely new instrument panel with a very refined appearance. Fully integrated into the design is a 13.4-inch center touchscreen and a 12.3-inch driver information system. Both the touchscreen and lower physical climate controls are canted toward the driver in a fashion that echoes the Classic C/K series trucks of the 70s and 80s.
