What to Know About Chevrolet EV Maintenance

EV discussions often revolve around range, charging times, and one-pedal driving. The inherent power, as well as the quiet and smooth operation, are also common subjects. A less frequently discussed aspect of EV ownership is the significant reduction in maintenance.

Some sources suggest that electric car owners spend as little as one-third on vehicle maintenance compared to owners of similar gas-powered vehicles. This is because most traditional vehicle maintenance does not apply to EVs. Gas-powered drivetrains regularly require tune-ups, oil changes, air and oil filters, belts, spark plugs, and other routine maintenance tasks; none of this applies to EV drivetrains. In fact, EV drivetrains are nearly maintenance-free. However, many non-drivetrain aspects of EVs are like conventional gas-powered vehicles and still require regular maintenance. The trained technicians in Twin Falls Chevrolet’s Service Department know just what to look for.

Tires serve the same function regardless of drivetrain type. In fact, tire wear may increase on EVs because of the added weight of the battery pack. This accelerated wear indicates that tires should be rotated more frequently. GM recommends rotating tires every 7,500 miles to maintain even tread wear. Tire pressure should be checked at the same intervals as for gas-powered vehicles.

Brakes

You get a break here, so to speak, because brake components tend to last longer since a significant portion of EV braking is accomplished through regeneration, which uses the electric motor to recharge the battery. The steadier and smoother your braking is, the less you’ll need friction braking, allowing the brake pads and rotors to last significantly longer. However, at some point, brake pads will wear down and need to be replaced.

The Little Battery

This may surprise you, but an EV still contains a 12-volt battery. This is because many systems outside of the drivetrain, like the audio system, power locks, and various internal components, do not require the high voltage of the large battery. It is safer to keep the high voltage where it is needed. Just like in conventional vehicles, this battery will need to be replaced occasionally.

Cabin Air Filter

An EV drivetrain doesn’t change how you breathe in the car, nor does it affect the dust and other particles that the cabin air filter works to keep out of the interior. The cabin air filter will follow the same replacement schedule as that of a conventional car.

Fluids

You no longer have to worry about engine oil or radiator fluid, but fluids for the brake and steering systems remain. While there is no transmission, a single ratio gearset requires a specialized transmission fluid. Additionally, the large battery has an optimum operating temperature, which is maintained through coolant fluid. All these need to retain a certain level and require eventual replacement, just as in a conventional vehicle.
