All models come standard with front-wheel drive, and an Ecotec 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine produces 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. The Ecotec engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission that makes the Trax feel lively to drive while maintaining smart shifting for fuel savings. The EPA estimates it will achieve 28 mpg in city driving and 31 mpg on the highway.

Nathan Adlen of Autoblog.com recently took a new Trax and put it up against a small economy car, the all-new 2026 Nissan Sentra, to see which is better for shoppers when looking for something affordable with modern safety and convenience tech features.  

Meet the Sentra 

The new Sentra starts at $23,845, which is just a tad bit more than the Trax. Under the hood is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 149 horsepower and 146 lb-ft of torque, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), something most buyers tend to avoid in economy cars because of past reliability issues. So, while the Sentra has more power than the Trax, it noticeably has less torque, which is what really helps propel a car forward during acceleration. Since both vehicles weigh around 3,000 lbs., give or take a few depending on options, the Trax should drive a little sportier around town.

The Sentra has a nice-sized trunk at 14.1 cubic feet, but since the Trax is a crossover, the hatch offers superior cargo space at 25.6 cu.ft. behind the rear seats, or 54.1 with the seats folded.

Around town, Nathan, the writer, said that the Trax felt more lively thanks to its extra torque and conventional transmission, saying it, “… feels composed on most roads, and if you keep the revs up, it delivers a touch of sporty enthusiasm. It handles better than you might think …” Which is a big difference compared to what he said about the Sentra: “… it’s not quick; the CVT dulls response when passing, and you’ll need to plan overtakes carefully. It could also benefit from having better sound-deadening materials throughout.”
