Up to now, the EV offerings at Twin Falls Chevrolet have either been small, as in the Bolt and Bolt EUV or very large, in the case of the Silverado EV. These are great vehicles, but being near the two ends of the consumer vehicle size spectrum has left much of the car-buying public untapped. The Blazer EV changes all that as a mid-size 5-passenger SUV aimed at the heart of the market. It has to be an exceptional product to win middle America over to EVs, and the Blazer is just that, as proven by its winning the Motor Trend 2024 SUV of the year award.

Over 40 Competitors for the Title

There is no shortage of new and redesigned SUVs for the year, which meant the Blazer EV had to beat 40 competitors to win MotorTrend’s prestigious “Golden Calipers”. MotorTrend cites the Blazer EV’s cutting-edge technology, dynamic design, and multiple powertrain choices as the reasons for their selection. The Blazer EV continues Chevy’s legacy of delivering innovative electric vehicles for its customers, first seen by MotorTrend’s 2017 Car of the Year winner, the Chevrolet Bolt EV.

“Chevrolet has truly nailed the design and functionality with the Blazer EV, which looks and operates just as an industry-leading all-electric SUV should,” said Ed Loh, MotorTrend Group head of editorial. “The Chevy Blazer EV offers an effortless driving experience, seamlessly integrates into your lifestyle, and boasts user-friendliness that’s hard to match.”

Chevrolet gave the model the Blazer name to give the public an instant sense of the vehicle’s size, utility, and sport-focus design. Beyond that, however, it is an entirely different model designed to maximize the advantages and unique packaging of its Ultium electric drivetrain to better serve anyone looking at a mid-size SUV.

In competing for the Motor Trend award, all models were evaluated on six key criteria with the most important being:

  • Advancement in design
  • Performance of intended function
  • Safety

The models do not all compete with each other but rather how they compete in their category, which, for the Blazer EV, is all non-luxury midsize SUVs, not just midsize EV SUVs.

“We are excited and honored to receive this recognition for the Blazer EV,” said Scott Bell, vice president of Chevrolet. “This vehicle takes convenience and customer choice to the next level, a major step in delivering on Chevrolet’s promise to provide an EV for everyone.”

Multiple Trim Levels and Drivetrains

The 2024 Blazer EV is available in multiple trims, LT, RS, and SS, which marks Chevy’s first-ever electric SS model. It is also unique in being available with front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive. The EPA certified the rear-wheel-drive models to provide an estimated 324 miles on a full charge. On the road, DC public fast-charging can be up to 190 kW, depending on the model, which enables approximately 78 miles of range to be added in 10 minutes.

The upcoming SS model has AWD and lives up to its designation with up to 557 horsepower and 648 lb-ft of torque, which enables a 0-60 acceleration time of under 4 seconds. With a GM-estimated range of 290 miles, the SS also features a standard head-up display, SuperCruise capability, and 22-inch machine-finished wheels.

The interior design draws inspiration from Chevrolet’s sports cars and performance heritage, as evidenced by the flat-bottom steering wheel for the RS and SS trims and sculpted turbine-like vents. Standard is an expansive, 17.7-inch-diagonal color touchscreen complemented by an 11-inch-diagonal color Driver Information Center in the instrument cluster. The cabin has plenty of room for five occupants, and being an EV, the floor is completely flat.
