​​Chevrolet Silverado HD Trail Boss Reviewed​

The Chevrolet Silverado HD lineup of trucks continues to offer customers more variations and trim levels to ensure there is literally a truck for everyone. With the latest addition of the Silverado HD Trail Boss, buyers get a truck that bridges the gap between rough-and-ready for off-road duties and good manners for on-road daily driving duties.  

Engine Options for the Silverado HD Trail Boss 

With the new HD Trail Boss, Silverado 2500 customers can choose between a 6.6-liter gas V8 or a 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V8. The gas V8 puts out 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque, while the diesel engine churns out a very potent 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are mated to an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission. While the Silverado 2500 gas engine packs less power and torque than the diesel, it is still a very healthy amount that allows it to conventionally tow up to 16,000 pounds, depending on configuration. The Duramax will tow up to 20,000 pounds when properly configured.  

A GearJunkie Review 

GearJunkie recently took the latest 2025 Silverado HD Trail Boss for a spin around Los Angeles and the desert—and hauled a dirt bike for some extra fun. Its truck was equipped with the Duramax diesel (that made it easy to not feel the dirt bike in the bed of the truck) and cruised down the highways in ultimate luxury and style. When it came time to take the roads less traveled, the Z71 off-road suspension on the Trail Boss made it so the author had no issues or reservations when leaving the highways and main roads for the trails.  

What the Trail Boss Package Means 

When choosing the Trail Boss package, the Silverado HD gets Z71 off-road suspension mixed with Rancho shock dampers. (More expensive ZR2 and Bison models get the Multimatic DSSV dampers.) The surprise for the journalist was that the truck felt every bit as capable still, especially with the BFGoodrich K03 all-terrain tires: “Instead, I wanted to test the new Trail Boss package as a more affordable alternative to the top-spec ZR2 and Bison Silverados. I wondered beforehand whether the lack of Multimatic DSSV dampers might render the truck too uncomfortable for off-roading. The K03s contributed to a surprisingly calm cabin while driving the Trail Boss at highway speeds, too. The V8 purrs along at low revs happily thanks to the 10-speed auto, with minimal tire hum or wind rush entering the cabin otherwise.” 

A Technological Interior 

The interior of the Silverado HD is every bit as usable as what’s on the outside of the truck. With the interior size and volume, there is more than plenty of room for five passengers and their luggage. A 13.4-inch infotainment touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster allow for every bit of pertinent information to be viewed quickly and easily. The infotainment system features Google built-in and Google Assistant that can help drivers control music, send text messages, request directions via Google Maps, and change vehicle settings on the fly.  

A Plethora of Safety Features 

Owners can feel comfortable knowing that the Silverado HD is very safe with features like Front Pedestrian Braking, Forward Collision Alert, Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Following Distance Indicator, Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert, Enhanced Transparent Trailer, Gross Combined Weight Alert, and Adaptive Cruise Control (both with and without a trailer attached).
