Chevrolet Suburban Lives For Road Trips

1935, the year that beer was first put into a can. The parking meter was created. Babe Ruth hit his 714th home run, a record that would stand for 29 years. Porky Pig debuted, and the Chevrolet Suburban was first put on sale. This makes the Suburban the longest-running nameplate of any car in history. It was created to make long-distance traveling with families a breeze, and 89 years later, it is still living up to its original intention. 

AutoWeek Tests The 2024 Suburban

AutoWeek recently took a 2024 Suburban with a 3.0-liter Duramax Diesel for a spin and found it to be a “cruise ship” made for absolute comfort and without inconvenience, saying, “The Duramax diesel doesn’t feel short on power, so highway onramps can be taken without flooring the throttle, even though this engine is pulling quite a bit of car. On the highway is where the diesel Suburban feels at home, eating up miles without the fuel gauge moving even a millimeter.”

Trims & Engine Choices

Buyers are able to choose between three engines and five different trim levels, including LS, LT, Z71, RST, Premier, and the model that AutoWeek tested, High Country. The engines are all reliable and offer plenty of power and torque. The standard 5.3-liter Vortec V8 produces 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque, a 6.2-liter V8 that makes 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, or the incredible 3.0-liter inline-6 Duramax turbo-diesel that has 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. All engines are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. 

The Duramax Is About Economy

The Duramax Suburban is by far the most fuel-efficient of all the Suburban models, and AutoWeek pointed this out in their review, saying, “But the Suburban can also be optioned with a 3.0-liter Duramax turbodiesel inline six-cylinder, offering a $1,500 discount over the 6.2-liter V8. With 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, this is also the version that will offer 26 mpg on the highway and 20 mpg in town for a combined 22 mpg, at least according to EPA figures. These are far more favorable numbers than you’re going to see in either V8.”

More Space Than Your Living Room

There is no vehicle on this earth in the price range of the big Chevy that can even come close to competing with its interior size and space. Behind the third-row seats, you will find 41.5 cu.ft. of space, which is more than some crossovers with all their seats folded. When you fold the third-row seats, you will have 93.8 cu.ft., with a maximum of 144.7 cu.ft. behind the first row with all seats folded. If you live in New York City, you can buy a Suburban for about the same amount of money it costs to rent some apartments… and have more interior space. 

There’s Nothing Quite Like It

By the time he got to the end of the review, the author found that there was nothing short of a Cadillac Escalade that’s as usable, comfortable, and luxurious: “With a few options checked, including Super Cruise, the diesel Suburban is for eating up hundreds of highway miles in one dash, while also towing something large weighing up to 7,800 pounds.”
