Many people gravitate towards the largest trucks money can buy, but today’s midsize models are more capable and useful than some realize. The Ford Ranger and Chevrolet Colorado are two popular options in the segment, and both are available in beefy off-road trims that can take owners well off the beaten path. While they’re similar in many ways, the two take slightly different approaches to the off-road lifestyle. Here’s how they compare.

The 2024 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison has a turbocharged 2.7-liter engine that produces 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. It rides on 35-inch tires and has 12.2 inches of ground clearance thanks to its factory lift kit and Multimatic shocks.

The Ford Ranger Raptor came to the United States in 2024, bringing a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that produces 405 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. It uses Fox live-valve shocks and offers 10.7 inches of ground clearance. That power upgrade over the Colorado makes the Ranger about two seconds quicker to 60 mph and helps the truck feel much more lively off-road.

In terms of doing real “truck stuff,” both models can get the job done. The Colorado Bison ZR2 has a 5,500-pound towing capacity and 1,050 pounds of payload. The Ranger Raptor offers 5,510 pounds of towing and 1,375 pounds of payload. Those numbers are slightly lower than the standard version of both trucks, as the off-road suspension and tuning can limit weights and capacities. Additionally, both trucks are very tall, which might make it difficult for some people to lift heavier items into the bed.

Both trucks are available in crew cab configurations with four doors and five seats. While they are on the rugged side of their respective lineups, both models have comfortable cabins with plenty of tech and space. Chevy equips an 11.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and an eight-inch digital gauge cluster. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are on board, along with Google Built-In, which brings Google Assistant, maps, and some Play Store features.

The Ford Ranger Raptor has a 12.4-inch display in portrait orientation. It runs the automaker’s latest Sync 4A infotainment system and offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Ford also equips a digital gauge cluster with configurable views.
