Chevy Corvette ZR1 Sounds Otherworldly

The Chevrolet Corvette is an American institution, and the current 8th generation Corvette, with its mid-engine layout, has absolutely embarrassed the world’s best supercars. While the standard Corvette Stingray is fast, the Z06 is even faster. The ultimate E-Ray is even more bonkers with its all-wheel drive and electric motor that assists that gas engine. But there’s still one Corvette that has yet to debut, and the teasers that Chevrolet is putting out are sure to raise the hairs on the back of your neck. 

Current C8 Corvette Models

The three available Corvette models are the standard Corvette, Z06, and the E-Ray. The C8 Corvette Stingray is powered by an LT2 6.2-liter V8 engine that produces 495 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. In the hands of Car and Driver, the standard Corvette gets from 0 to 60 mph in 2.8 seconds. The Z06 features an LT6 5.5-liter flat-plane crank V8 that puts out 670 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque and then gets to 60 in just 2.6 seconds. Buyers wanting an electric Corvette can buy the E-Ray, which uses the same 6.2-liter V8 in the “normal” Corvette and adds a 1.1-kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack that helps to create 655 horsepower and get the E-Ray to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds. 

The ZR1 Sounds Like A Monster

How much more can you get from a Corvette? Well, apparently, a lot more because coming soon is the Corvette ZR1. While Chevrolet hasn’t given out any major information, journalists are sure the new ZR1 will have a twin-turbo version of the 5.5-liter motor in the Z06 that will be dubbed the LT7 and is expected to produce 850 or so horsepower. 

Journalists Have A Bead On The ZR1

Journalists are confident about this information because Chevrolet released a video that’s just an audio tease of the sound of the new ZR1, which combines the familiar tones of the flat plane crank in the Z06 with the sounds of turbochargers. 

ZR1 History: C3 and C4 

This C8 ZR1 will be the fourth iteration of the ZR1 name, which first appeared as a special order for the 1970 Corvette. The 1970 ZR1 featured a 350 LT1 5.7-liter V8 that put out 370 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque…or so Chevrolet said, and ran an extra $1,010.50. A heavier-duty 4-speed manual was put in place to handle the extra power of the LT1, and it also featured bigger brakes, better cooling with an aluminum radiator, and specially tuned suspension components. Roughly 53 cars were ordered and built between 1970-1972. The C4 Corvette ZR-1 was the car that changed the world. A specially designed and built 5.7-liter LT5 V8 that made 375 horsepower, later bumped to 405, and 370 lb-ft of torque. It was good for 0-60 times of 4.5 seconds and broke multiple world records, including going an average of 175.885 mph for 24 hours. 

C6 ZR1

Chevrolet wouldn’t produce another Corvette ZR1 until the C6 generation in 2009, this time with a supercharged 6.2-liter LS9 engine that produced 638 horsepower and 604 lb-ft of torque. When it debuted, it hit 60 mph in 3.4 seconds, went through the ¼-mile at 11.5 seconds at 128 mph, and went from 0-100 in just 7.6 seconds. Oh, and it was the first production Corvette to have a top speed over 200 mph, 205 to be exact. 

C7 ZR1

The final ZR1, the C7 generation, saw a monumental change. Where all three previous ZR1s flew under the radar with normal Corvette styling with subtle cues that it was maybe a little different, the 2019 ZR1 could get to 60 mpg in 3 seconds flat, fly through the ¼ mile in 10.8 seconds at 135 mph, and hit 100 in 6.1 seconds. All with a top speed of 212 mph. It did all this with a supercharged LT5 6.2-liter V8 that put out 755 horsepower and 715 lb-ft of torque. Two things were new on this ZR1: an automatic transmission could be chosen, and buyers could either have a low-wing model or a track version with a gigantic wing. 

Big Shoes To Fill

The C8 Corvette ZR1 has some massive Shaq-sized 23s to fill, that’s for sure. The ZR1 will debut later this year as a 2025 model…and then there are rumors that an all-electric Corvette called the Zora will soon be coming.
