For Plenty of Hauling and Off-Roading, There Is the Silverado 2500HD Trail Boss

Manufacturers have done a great job of making full-size half-ton pickup trucks aggressive, intimidating, and capable. This is certainly true for Chevrolet, but Ford, Ram, and Toyota have all followed a similar approach. Despite their big and burly appearances, they still seem small when a Silverado HD pulls up, especially when it’s geared up for off-roading like a Silverado 2500HD Trail Boss. This Twin Falls Chevrolet post explores whether a Silverado 2500HD Trail Boss is right for you.

When it comes to everything one admires in a half-ton full-size pickup truck, there is simply more of those things to love in a Silverado HD. It’s taller, wider, and has larger, more powerful engines—particularly the Duramax 6.6-liter V8, which is unavailable in the Silverado 1500. While it certainly has the power, its size can present difficulties when the trail gets tight and narrow or when it comes to parking.

Towing serves as one of the primary functions of a heavy-duty truck, and the Silverado 2500HD certainly delivers. With the Duramax turbodiesel, the Silverado HD can tow up to 20,000 pounds with a hitch and 21,600 pounds with a gooseneck. This capacity is more than sufficient for many slide-out travel trailers or fifth-wheel rigs. You can transport substantial construction equipment to the job site with that level of capability. Furthermore, if you often haul heavy, dense items, the 3,387-pound payload capacity will be advantageous. If all your travels are on pavement, rear-wheel drive offers even higher figures. However, if you want to take your load off the pavement, you will need four-wheel drive to get it there and back, particularly if it rains in between.

To have a little off-road fun in your truck after uncoupling the trailer, the first item on your order sheet should be the Z71 package. For just $325, you receive the Rancho off-road suspension with twin-tube shocks, skid plates, and hill-descent control, which does exactly what its name implies: keeps a slow, steady speed down a steep descent. In addition to the Z71 Package, the Trail Boss Package adds all-terrain tires, bright red tow hooks, and aesthetic enhancements.

You end up with a truck featuring 10.1 inches of ground clearance, which can handle a lot, and the skid plates are there for extra protection. Of course, that much ground clearance necessitates a high step up to get in and out, so running boards might be advisable.

If off-roading is your priority, consider a Silverado 2500HD ZR2 (or Silverado 1500 ZR2 or even a Colorado ZR2, due to the HD’s weight and size). However, if your off-road needs take a back seat to your heavy trailer and/or payload requirements, the Silverado 2500HD Trail Boss will have you covered.
