How to Use the Multi-Flex Midgate on Your Chevrolet Silverado EV?

January 1st, 2026 by

Remember the Chevrolet Avalanche? You may have owned one some time ago. If you did, then you may recall one of its best features – the midgate. This enabled you to carry longer items from the bed into the cabin by lowering the wall and rear glass. It was an innovation that needed another chance for buyers to experience the versatility of our pickup trucks, and it is one of the main attractions on the 2026 Silverado EV.

The innovative Multi-Flex Midgate is a set of “doors” that separate the bed and the cabin. It is located right behind the second row of seats. It extends the five-foot-eleven-inch bed to a maximum of eleven feet in length, adding more cargo hauling possibilities.

How do you operate the Multi-Flex Midgate? There is a handy guide on the Chevrolet website that walks you through the process step-by-step. But let us guide you through the steps to use this handy tool in the Silverado EV.

Before proceeding, ensure your Silverado EV is in Park with the doors unlocked. That way, the buttons to operate the midgate will work. You must secure the second-row seatbelts to the opening slot in the door trim before folding down the rear seats. You may need to move the front seats forward to allow the rear seats to fold completely.

One thing to consider is the weight of the midgate itself. If you let it fall forward, it will get damaged. Instead, stand outside the Silverado EV and hold the midgate securely in place. It may take a bit of effort to lift and close it.

Next, press either of the buttons to open the larger door of the midgate. They call this the 60-percent pass-through door, as it represents that amount of the midgate assembly. You cannot lower the other 40-percent pass-through door before you lower the larger one. Once you lower the larger one, then press either of the buttons a second time to lower the smaller door. You can lower both doors together. However, you must secure the glass before doing so. It must be placed in the Multi-Flex Midgate storage pocket.

To raise the midgate, use a motion firm enough to secure the latches for proper closure of the doors. When it is raised and latched, release the seatbelts and raise the rear seats back to their normal position.
