Normal Life in the Far From Normal Corvette Z06

Any Corvette will stand out among the sedans, crossovers, and pickup trucks that fill our highways and city streets, but the mid-engined C8 Corvette in Z06 form takes “standing out” to an exponential level. If the slow-slung profile with the aggressive front face wasn’t enough, there is the distinct sound from the 675-horsepower flat-plane crank 5.5-liter V8 without an exhaust running down the length of the car to call attention to itself.

Motor Trend tried to get a year-long loan of a 2023 Corvette Z06 for one of their 40,000-mile tests but had to settle for about a month.  Still, they are doing their best to report what driving a Z06 is like fitting into the day-to-day routine.

From City to City

The first trip described was from Detroit to Chicago.  Writer Andrew Krok praised the magnetorheological dampers for keeping the highway ride tolerable.  He also noted that the Targa roof was effective in keeping the wind noise at bay. The Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires, however, made it known that they were made for maximum grip rather than minimum noise.  Stop-and-go traffic is a sad place for any supercar, and Krok found he preferred to use the transmission’s manual setting to shift from first to second.

Blind spot visibility is another common mid-engine supercar issue to which the Corvette is not immune, making the blind spot monitor that much more useful. The Corvette’s width also requires a little more attention when parking though parallel parking is significantly helped by the rear parking sensors.

Getting Groceries in Style

Writer Caleb Miller describes using the Z06 for that most mundane task, a trip to Target. He was the first writer to praise the remote start feature.  While others simply enjoyed hearing the flat-plane V8 start from the outside, Miller pointed out the practicality of starting the Z06 in a parking lot to find the low-slung car hidden behind all of the other taller vehicles in the lot.  His modest shopping duty did not tax the Corvette’s cargo-carrying ability, and he even lauded the “frunk” for being deep but confined enough that “ there was no room for the bags to slide around”.  After taking the long way home – because it’s a Corvette – and enjoying the vehicle’s impressive acceleration, he did notice the contents in the frunk got a bit warm.

The Joy of Just Having It Around

Rich Ceppos didn’t describe any domestic duty in the Corvette but rather the sheer enjoyment of hopping in a car in your driveway and taking it on his favorite nearby roads. “The Z06 goads and seduces with its brutal high-rpm lunges and fierce full-throttle shouts. It makes you pay attention, accelerating so hard that you can’t be thinking about anything else. It’s thrilling, enthralling, challenging. It’s therapeutic and freeing; you feel like you can fly.

The Weekend Outing

Finally, Dave VanderWerp was happy to report that on a weekend golfing trip, the rear trunk of the Corvette was easily able to swallow the golf bag and might even be able to fit two, which left room for luggage to accommodate the weekend.  Regarding comfort during the trip, he states: “Initially the cabin feels tight, but you get used to it and even with the most aggressive competition seats, the Z06 ends up being plenty comfortable for multiple hours at a time.”  He also made mention of the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R’s noise from sharp impacts leaving him to wonder what the base Michelin PS4S tires would be like.  Still, he concludes that “the Z06 is amazingly civil for a car that ran the fifth-fastest lap time at Virginia International Raceway in all our years of Lightning Lap.”

Between the three writers reporting, they drove a collective 1500 miles, but it is already clear that while the Corvette is not the most practical car for mundane driving – which is obvious to anyone – it is an extremely enjoyable car that can be used for such everyday tasks.  If you would like to see if such a combination of exhilarating and useful could work for you, pay a visit to Twin Falls Chevrolet and experience the Corvette for yourself.  If a two-seat world-beating supercar doesn’t quite fit in your life, the Camaro is a promising alternative, and there are plenty of models in stock beyond that that promise enjoyment while taking care of the day-to-day.
