Silverado’s Hands-Free Super Cruise Tows A Trailer Better Than You

The time has come when computers are officially never returning to being just a helpful tool. Now, they can almost fully beat us at more than just chess. With GM Super Cruise, you can now use advanced driver assistance technology when towing. Super Cruise can be optioned on the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country, and it can make driving and towing a much simpler and potentially safer experience for you and others on the road.
Motor1.com is a well-respected and trusted source for automotive news and car reviews. In the wild Los Angeles traffic, Brett T. Evans from Motor1 took a Silverado High Country with Super Cruise for a test while towing a 3,500 lb trailer. He came away with the fact that not only is Super Cruise really good, but it also acts like a seasoned towing veteran.

When equipped on an SUV or truck, Super Cruise adds extra sensors to allow the use of advanced technology when towing a vehicle. “Sensors in the brakes, accelerator, and suspension closely estimate the weight of the trailer and cargo on board, and the driver assistance suite compensates with appropriate following distances. Super Cruise Trailering includes a few enhancements over the passenger car version of the technology. In addition to the aforementioned weight sensors that help maintain safe distances to a lead car, the system also incorporates trailer blind spot monitoring to identify fast-approaching and cruising vehicles on either side of the truck. Such tech isn’t new, but Chevrolet goes a step further on pickups equipped with the surround-view camera.”

The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado can be optioned with four different engines: a new fantastic 2.7-liter TurboMax inline-4 that produces 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, the old trusty 5.3-liter V8 that makes 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque, the venerable 6.2-liter V8 that offers 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, and finally the beloved 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel inline-6 that puts out 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque. The Silverado can tow as much as 13,300 lbs when equipped with the Duramax and 6.2-liter, or up to 9,500 with the TurboMax and 11,300 with the 5.3.

“Super Cruise Trailering is a keen driver assistance system, providing plenty of information to the person behind the wheel and alleviating some of the drudgery of a highway drive. The stellar centering functionality alone, which works more consistently than even the most seasoned truck driver, should make it a consideration for folks who regularly tow for work or play. Although the trailer I towed was relatively small and light, Super Cruise still made the traffic-clogged transfer across Los Angeles admirably simple and easy.”
Currently, the Silverado High Country is the only trim level offered with Super Cruise. The High Country is an ultra-luxurious Silverado with leather and wood everywhere that features standard 4WD and a base price of $68,495. You can get the High Country with either the 5.3 V8, Duramax, or 6.2 V8.
