The 1,064-Horsepower Chevy Corvette ZR1 Breaks Road Atlanta’s Lap Record

April 1st, 2025 by

Road Atlanta is one of the most challenging motorsports venues in this country. With 12 turns, this short, hilly track with blind crests, tricky corners, a long straight, and bouncy surfaces yields an adventure of its own. This is why it is the home of IMSA and its season finale, the Petit Le Mans.

It is also the home of a  2025 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 victory. Recently, the ZR1 broke the course’s single lap record, timed at 1:22.8. That beat the previous record by .08 of a second—a hair-thin margin, but a significant one coming from the latest version of the most powerful American sports car.

What makes this possible is an extraordinary powerplant mounted behind the cabin of the ZR1. The new LT7 engine is a dual-overhead-camshaft 5.5-liter V8 engine with twin turbochargers and a high rev ceiling. It puts down 1,064 horsepower at 7,000 RPM and 828 pound-feet of torque at 6,000 RPM. A recent test clocked the ZR1 at 233 MPH – the fastest top speed of any production vehicle built by Chevrolet.

Performance is the key to the ZR1. Keeping that performance on the surface is another layer of design and engineering that enables it to stay on a challenging course, such as Road Atlanta. That is why the ZR1 has a widebody design with gaping air intakes and beefy rear fenders. The purposeful carbon fiber aero package creates over 1,200 pounds of downforce at top speed. That includes carbon fiber side profile air ducts funneling clean, cool air through its ducts, which are seamlessly integrated into the signature wishbone bezel behind the cabin doors to cool the rear brakes through an intricately designed system that doesn’t impact rear wheel travel.

The message is that speed and performance alone cannot achieve record-breaking lap times. A vehicle needs proper downforce and aerodynamics to keep it planted through the turns, elevations, and the straights in order to accomplish these benchmarks. The 2025 Corvette ZR1 is a complete package that gives you the thrill of race-bred performance wrapped in an iconic shape. A shape that is available in a coupe and convertible.
