The Cab and Bed Choices Among Chevrolet Pickup Truck Lines

There are many factors to consider when buying a new truck. Two main concerns are how many people you’ll need to transport and how large a cargo bed you need. It’s important to have an answer to at least one of these questions because bed size and cab size often have a loose inverse relationship. Twin Falls Chevrolet explains the details. 

The Colorado Keeps Things Easy 

If you’re considering the midsize Chevrolet Colorado, the choice of cab and bed size is straightforward since all Colorados come with the same configuration: a Crew Cab and Short Bed. The Crew Cab is designed to seat five, with rear passengers having 34.7 inches of legroom and 54.7 inches of hip room. These figures are very close to those of a compact sedan like a Toyota Corolla, which has 34.8 and 51.3 inches, respectively. The bed length, which is abbreviated to 5’ 1”, is actually 61.7 inches.

A Vast Amount of Choices for the Silverado 1500 

If you don’t plan to carry passengers very often, and no more than two, but you expect to haul plenty of cargo, the Silverado 1500 Regular Cab can seat three people with its single bench seat. Unsurprisingly, three abreast fit a little better in the wider truck compared to the Colorado by offering 60.9 inches of hip room. The regular cab is available with the larger two of the three Silverado 1500 truck beds, including the Standard Bed at 6’ 6” and the Long Bed at 8’ 1”, or technically 98.18 inches long. All Silverado beds have the same width at 71.4 inches at the floor and 50.63 inches between the wheelhouses. The Regular Cab is the only Silverado 1500 option with the Long Bed and, due to its utilitarian nature, is only available in the Work Truck trim level. 

If you need to carry four or five passengers, especially kids, or for short trips, the Silverado 1500 offers the Double Cab. It features front and rear bench seats, each accommodating three people, making it the only cab option that can seat six. With an extended cab and a short pair of rear side doors, the Double Cab provides about half an inch more legroom than the Colorado at 35.2 inches, while the rear hip room is significantly more spacious at 60.2 inches. The Double Cab is only paired with the standard 6’ 6” bed. It comes in Work Truck, LT, and RST trim levels.  

The largest and most popular Silverado Cab option is the Crew Cab. With bucket seats in the front and a bench seat in the rear, this cab offers full-size accommodation for five with 43.4 inches of rear legroom. This surpasses what can be found in large SUVs like the Lincoln Nautilus (43.1 inches) and Jeep Wagoneer (42.7 inches). It is even just shy of the 43.8 inches provided in a Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The most popular Crew Cab pairing is with the short 5’ 8” bed (69.9 inches), available across no fewer than nine trim levels, from Work Truck to High Country and ZR2. It is also available with the standard 6’ 6” bed. At over twenty feet long, the Crew Cab with the standard bed isn’t available on the very off-road-focused ZR2 trims but is offered on nearly every other trim level.

Three Cabs and Two Bed Sizes for the HD 2500 

The Silverado HD 2500 truck lineup is also available in Regular, Double, and Crew Cab configurations, with cabin dimensions identical to those of the 1500. The short bed isn’t offered, but all cabs can be equipped with a 6’ 8” Standard Bed or an 8’ 1” Long Bed, which extends the overall length of the truck to over 22 feet. 

The Silverado EV: One Configuration with a Hat Trick 

Finally, there is the Silverado EV, which, like the Colorado, is only available as a Crew Cab with a 5’ 9” Short Bed. However, with the Midgate down and the bed extending over the folded rear seatbacks of the cab, the bed length nearly doubles to 10’ 10″. This makes it the longest truck bed in the entire Chevrolet lineup, although it will probably have the coldest cabin during an Idaho winter.
