The Redesigned Traverse Is Chevrolet’s State-of-the-Art Family Vehicle

The Traverse High Country 4×4 has an EPA city/highway/combined rating of 19/24/21 compared to 15/20/17 for a Tahoe High Country 4×4 with its standard engine. 

This is partly because the Traverse dropped the V6 from its previous design generation in favor of a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine. Paired with an 8-speed shiftable automatic, the engine can move the Traverse and all its passengers and cargo just fine with 328 horsepower and 326 lb-ft of torque. That is more horsepower and torque than you will find in competing 3-row crossovers such as the Toyota Grand Highlander (265 / 310), Honda Pilot (285 / 262), and Hyundai Palisade (291 / 262), while getting fuel economy that is within one MPG of all of those competing models. 

What matters in this category is space, and the Traverse has plenty of it, with passenger volume that rivals its larger Tahoe sibling. Its standard 17.7-inch center touchscreen appears perfectly proportional to the spacious cabin. The screen operates on the quick and intuitive Google Built-in operating system, which features on-board Google Maps and the Alexa Assist voice recognition system. The system also provides access to several apps in the Google Play Store, including favorites like Waze and Spotify. If you enjoy the interface on your Apple or Android phone, the system will mirror it wirelessly. 

The center screen, standard digital driver’s information center, physical volume controls, and HVAC system are all arranged cohesively and attractively. The column-mounted transmission control allows the center console to offer more storage space for the items you like to keep on hand.  

The remainder of the interior highlights Chevrolet’s expertise in family travel. The second-row captain’s chairs are elevated enough to provide full-size passengers with a clear view ahead over the front seats while still offering ample headroom for anyone over 6 feet tall. These passengers have their own climate controls and can connect to the outside world through USB-C ports, as well as a 120-volt household outlet. A simple one-touch tilt-and-slide function makes it easy to access the third row, even when a child seat is installed in the second row. Third-row passengers will discover their own USB-C ports, cupholders, and even overhead climate vents. 

Behind the third-row seat, there is 22.9 cubic feet of cargo space, more than its Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, and Ford Explorer rivals. The maximum cargo space when both second and third row seats are down is also greater than that of these competitors. 

Long vacation trips are common for Idaho residents, and the Traverse High Country provides plenty of features to make the miles easier, such as heated and ventilated front seats and heated second row seats, all while the 10-speaker Bose audio system fills the otherwise quiet cabin.
