Chevy Suburban Hits The Goldilocks Marker

July 15th, 2024 by

When it comes to extra-large vehicles that make life easier, the Chevrolet Suburban is at the top of that list. At 89 years old, it also happens to be the oldest nameplate of any vehicle continuously on sale in the United States. But this is one old dog that has learned new tricks with each of its 12 generations.

A Hagerty Review of The Suburban

Recently, the fine journalists at Hagerty, the famous classic car insurance company that also has a magazine, website, and YouTube channel that reviews new vehicles, took a 2024 Suburban High Country for a spin for a week to see how great the latest offering really is. With all of the words came one simple sentence from the author that summed up the week with the Suburban: “I loved it.”

Engine Choices and Trim Levels

The 2024 Suburban is offered in three unique engine choices with five trim levels, including LS, LT, Z71, RST, Premier, and the model that AutoWeek tested, High Country. The engines are all reliable and offer plenty of power and torque. The standard 5.3-liter Vortec V8 produces 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque, a 6.2-liter V8 that makes 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, or the incredible 3.0-liter inline-6 Duramax turbo-diesel that has 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. All engines are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Isolation From The World

When the author first got into the Suburban, she was impressed and even calmed by the isolation from the rest of the road, saying, “When you slide behind the wheel and thunk the door shut, your first experience is one of regal isolation. Not only is your perch lofty and supremely comfortable, but the cabin is very quiet, thanks to windows made of acoustically-treated glass. Whether at idle or highway speed, the only noise from the V-8 is a subdued, reassuring burble. Under acceleration, the roar of the engine is as powerful and calming as a distant waterfall.”

Size Matters, But So Does Visibility

One thing that the Suburban does better than many larger vehicles is allowing drivers to not only see well while driving but actually see over their shoulders when changing lanes. You would think such a vehicle would have a blind spot the size of Kansas, but the author noted, “For all its size and weight, the Suburban is a remarkably docile vehicle. Visibility is excellent thanks to upright B- and C-pillars and giant side-view mirrors. The 6.2 and the ten-speed are a delightful combination: Whisper-quiet at highway speeds but, at the prod of the accelerator pedal, ready to hurl you down an on-ramp or execute a purposeful merge.”

A Great Capacity For Many Things

The real story about the extra-large Chevy, though, is its ability to hold pretty much anything you can think of. Not just in terms of interior size but cubbies and spaces to put drinks, headphones, wallets, and other random items: “Capacity isn’t the only virtue of the interior, as its configurability is good, too. The second-row captain’s chairs are easy to stow out of the way, whether to ease access to the third row or, with that rearmost seat folded, increase stuff-hauling space. Yank the plastic lever on the lower side of the seat once, and it folds on itself; twice and the folded chair unlatches from the floor and rotates toward the front of the vehicle. You can fold (and raise!) the second and third rows from the rear thanks to a set of plastic rocker switches and an array of electric motors.”

Interior Cargo Space

The Suburban is made to make sure everyone has the best seat in the house. Behind the third-row seats, you will find 41.5 cu.ft. of space, more than some crossovers with all their seats folded. When you fold the third-row seats, you will have 93.8 cu.ft., with a maximum of 144.7 cu.ft. behind the first row with all seats folded.

In Conclusion

In her conclusion, the author from Hagerty said, “The Chevrolet Suburban isn’t just an old nameplate that GM enjoys recycling: It is a remarkably consistent recipe that GM has been refining for decades. As of 2024, the General has that recipe down to a science. If you are shopping for a full-size SUV, and you treasure old-school comfort in an understated package, this is your vehicle. It’s packed with the latest driver-assist features and capable of integration with your Google-centric lifestyle …”
